10 Boomer Shooters of 2024 That Blast Your Vitals Into a Frenzy

This list of 10 indie boomer shooters is chock-full of carnage. So strap in. Lock and load into the jagged edges of the unapologetic indie FPS underworld, where everything’s on fire or on its way to certain hell.

Some titles dip into grotesque horrors, while others have an unforgettable stylistic edge that’s hard to miss.

Off-kilter homage with minimal cooldown. Heart-pumping action that’s an assault to the senses and an affront to the enemy hordes who hate your guts. Act fast, or else the madness overruns everything in its path.

Take the reins. Pixel spray your way to catharsis.

Cryptis

The slaughter zone is teeming with color-coded undead that have eyes for you, and it’s not to reach you about your car’s extended warranty. Take down monster spawns by unloading on the pixel-borne fiends to proceed to the next area.

Cryptis has all the glitched-out ghouls and weapons for a solid boomer shooter experience that doesn’t need to overstay.

Atmospheric hellscapes in glowing, otherworldly contrast lighting that works so well here are perhaps becoming dev Dobrx’s visual signatures. Hopefully, more promising follow-ups to come.

A great opener for this list, and free to play.

Mullet Madjack

The city is bustling. Neon signs are pulsating. Cars are blazingly fast. Still, in this world, Jack gets so low on dopamine that he could, like, literally die, even when he’s on a mission to frag some bad guys with the whole world watching. The clock? 10 seconds each level, unless the kill count keeps coming.

Jack has to be in constant action to maintain his lifeline, similar to playing as Jean Wick in Flicker of Hope.

The pace is fast and aggressive. It’s arcade madness in ‘90s anime style. Balls to the wall as it can get, as robotic-panic as Akira, in Oldboy’s iconic long-take corridor fight scene cranked way up, in first-person, and looped. Actually insane.

Anger Foot

Another city-slicker in a high-octane, hardstyle thumper in the gangster underbelly of wonderful Shit City. As vice-ridden as Sin City, but drenched with a feverish, neon-electric 3D meltdown and swag-filled freakshows with plenty of attitude.

This one’s got no chill on leg day. Raging kicks can send henchmen’s heads to the drywall, thanks to a special pair of sneakers. There’s a choice of stompers with tactical quirks to try out alongside other handheld weapons. A flamethrower in this economy? Hell yeah.

Lovers of lawless, urban decay with backwater criminals (and door salesmen) will get a kick out of this one.

This chaos is courtesy of indie studio Free Lives, with Devolver Digital on publishing duty, which specializes in original and eccentric games.

Exophobia

An alien-busting FPS with metroidvania progression for fans of expansive spacecrafts.

You find yourself in a totally human-made ship occupied by alien entities. Why? You’ll have to figure it out as you’re blasting through their insides, an arsenal of deep-space weapons at a time.

What is known and written in the stars (AKA by the dev, officially) is that Zarkonians, the octopus-like extraterrestrials, are… cuter Cthulhus. Okay, vision noted!

What? You demand even more tentacles? Scurry on to Forgive Me Father 2. Not enough? Have this entire list then to match your cosmic freak.

Extraneum

Great news, you’re hired! Yet another cog in the machine, expendable and working overtime. For a second there, you’re a security guard blissfully unaware of the extensive rounds of ammo you’ll have to unload in this shift. Good thing bloodthirst for inhuman, non-sentient creatures is in your CV.

A straightforward sci-fi retro shooter with exploration in a 3D environment with 2D opponents and elements. The level design is memorable, with hidden secrets scattered throughout the interconnected expanse.

Classic FPS fans, get your guns out or clock out indefinitely.

Coven

A slash and shoot with occult leanings that goes hard on a revenge arc-induced bloodbath.

You begin by being burned at the stake. So rude. Anyway, when you’ve been reanimated, you might as well settle the score by eating the corpses of your recent kills.

Rampage stops when you’re eating someone’s kneecaps. Time can be bent to your will. Anything that moves dies. Cue Tarantino’s maddening blood sprays.

There’s much to see here, even while the game is currently in early access. New episodes to come soon.

Undead female rage? Hell knows damn well there’s no fury that comes close.

Forgive Me Father 2

Unknowable ghastly horrors have once again graced your waking hours. Find refuge in this tentacled nightmare fuel where the creatures are as dreadfully visualized as they are (un)spoken by Lovecraft himself.

The weapons here become more and more unhinged as the creatures at the end of the barrel. The reload animations are unholy glimpses into… whatever that thing was.

A continuation of the first game with the same beloved comic-style atmosphere.

Reaper

A throwback to arcade-style horror from DOSMan Games, repping the bite-sized boomer shooter genre with other similar titles. Like others, they are single-developer indie titles that are love letters to classics of the genre. Ambitious yet highly appreciated.

This dungeon crawler has the Grim Reaper paying a visit to take the souls of the condemned. But they’re not coming gently into that good night, it seems.

There’s a good deal of melee paired with magic or firearms-based ranged combat. There are rooms to explore and weapons to pick up.

At times, Death swaps the scythe for a more modern one-way ticket to hell. Clue: made of metal and goes boom. The legion works hard, but Death works harder.

Cruel

If the hotel hallway scene in Paprika had a flurry of enemies with seriously murderous intent towards you, then these Cruel corridors are set to become the same fever dream you can’t let go of.

The gameplay ramp looks easy enough, but it can get quite savage. You’re using more than just your hand: two to be exact, dual-wielding to unleash a fury of ammo or something more analogue, like a pipe no less, when the onslaught is cutting too close for comfort. Your foot also comes in clutch to smash doors open.

This is a fast-paced aggro rush, flying limbs and all.

Reverend

We got a DOSMan multi-verse going on here, this time as publisher. Here’s yet another nod to the classics of the FPS genre like Blood, Duke Nukem 3D, and Rise of the Triad–all released in the ‘90s. These are fast-paced, ultra-violent, and have a funny bone or two hidden in the floorboards somewhere.

Reverend, also stylized as REVEREND, is a dark, demon-themed shooter sprinkled with Eldritch horrors. Soon enough, chunky pixels of rage are flying out of the fray.

And by the way, the latest release from DOSMan is a full-on Cthulu-inspired crashout. Yup! Check that out.

You’re in enemy territory if you think doors are meant to keep people out, and that cursed creatures should remain unnamed. These games don’t wait around. Kick the door down, swap your firearms for slashers (or sneakers), and move.

It’s for when you want your FPS relatively short, fast-paced, unfiltered, and unholy. Get in, get out, don’t die. Got it?
